03 / Water analysis

Water screening
on-site.

Preliminary survey and screening of wash water, focused on operation, water quality and decision basis. Results in under 90 seconds, without reagents.

Parameters measured: COD and BOD as indicator values via UV-VIS spectrophotometry
Report with concrete recommendations for optimisation and investment
Practical information

The screening is used to optimise operation, assess the need for water treatment, or as a decision basis before dialogue with authorities.

The preliminary survey is for operation and process control. When needed, we also take water samples and send them to an accredited lab for official discharge documentation.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

Briefly explained: car wash, environmental requirements and documentation

Why do car wash facilities need water treatment?

+
Car wash water contains oil, heavy metals, surfactants and sludge particles from tyre and brake wear. Discharged untreated, it harms the aquatic environment and can damage the biology of public sewers. Regulations therefore require car wash facilities to treat the water before discharge, normally through a sand trap and oil separator dimensioned to EN 858.

What is an oil separator and why is it required?

+
An oil separator separates oil and hydrocarbons from wastewater using gravity and coalescence filters. Oil separators are required for car wash facilities under applicable regulations. Norrloop supplies WaterCare Class I oil separators, certified to EN 858-1, with a capacity of 3-80 l/s.

What is the difference between a sand trap and an oil separator?

+
The sand trap removes heavy particles (sand, gravel, sludge) through sedimentation, while the oil separator removes oil and hydrocarbons through coalescence filters. They are two separate WaterCare components often combined in one facility, where the sand trap normally precedes the oil separator so the latter handles the statutory control point before discharge to the public sewer (EN 858).

How do we measure BOD/COD in the field?

+
We use ABB UviTec, a portable field meter that applies UV-VIS spectrophotometry at multiple wavelengths to give indicator values for COD and BOD in seconds, based on calibrated correlations against laboratory samples.

Does Norrloop deliver across the Nordics?

+
Yes, Norrloop delivers solutions to the car wash industry across the Nordics, including Norway, Denmark and Sweden. We cover the entire region with sales, installation and service.

Which regulations and standards must our facility comply with?

+
Key frameworks: Municipal discharge permits set the requirements for discharge of oil-bearing wastewater. EN 858-1 and EN 858-2 are the harmonised standards for oil separators (Class I and II); all units must be CE-marked. EN 1825 covers grease separators for the food industry. Many municipalities also set their own limits, particularly for heavy metals. Norrloop assists with dimensioning, documentation and dialogue with authorities to ensure the facility meets applicable requirements.

Do we need a sampling well for a discharge permit?

+
It depends on the type of installation. With buried tanks, the sampling well is the physical access point for taking samples and is normally required. The requirement must always be clarified with the relevant authority in each project. When relevant, we supply a sampling well in the WaterCare range (Ø425-600 mm, EN 858-2).
