High-level alarm: overfill alarm for pump well, tank and basement

01What is a high-level alarm?

A high-level alarm, also called a level alarm or overfill alarm, monitors the water level in a well or tank. When the water rises to a predetermined level, an alarm with sound and light is triggered. The purpose is simple: give warning in time, so that a fault does not develop into flooding, odour or discharge.

02Where is it used?

• Pump well: warns if the pump fails, before the wastewater rises and overflows
• Holding tank / sealed tank: warns before the tank is full, so you have time to order emptying
• Basement: warns of flooding or backflow from the drain
• Separators: dedicated level alarms warn when the oil or sludge layer must be emptied

03How does it work?

A level sensor is placed in the well or tank. When the water reaches the sensor's level, it sends a signal to an alarm unit, usually mounted indoors, which warns with sound and light. Many alarms can in addition send a notification by SMS or to a mobile phone, so that you are warned even if you are not at home.

04Why is it important?

A high-level alarm is an inexpensive component that prevents costly and unpleasant incidents: wastewater overflowing, flooded basements, odour and discharge to the environment. In pump wells it is especially important, because the whole system depends on the pump working. If the pump fails without warning, the water rises until it overflows. The requirement for an alarm follows from applicable regulations and the local authority's discharge permit.

05Placement and installation

The level sensor is set at the right height in the well or tank, so that the alarm is triggered with a good margin before overflow. The alarm unit is placed where it will be heard and seen, ideally indoors. For sealed tanks and pump wells without regular supervision, an alarm with external notification (SMS) is extra useful.
